To irq506: I am wondering what you meant by a "base level existence"? Could you explain what this is? Thanks, Js.

I guess there is always someone who will appreciate something on screen, whether it be sex or violence or something else entirely. However, this point is kind of moot in this case, because it really does not explain the changes in trends in cinema.

There are many ways a sex scene can be done, but why the move toward something like in Baise Moi or Romance by these directors? I guess that is really my question. In this case it is irrelevant whether people really appreciate it or not.

In the case of movies like 9 Songs, if one were to take away the (explicit) sex scenes from it, then we will be left with a movie that is not as "interesting". I imagine it would be similar to taking the sex scenes out of Deep Throat, or would it?

I think sex scenes in films are fantastic. The more real the better. It is afterall a base level existence. Acting for actors on a screen is what they have to do to portray a story, lets have them simulate speech and motion, lets have them simulate eating and interaction. Lets have them simulate sexual interaction.
I think in a world where almost everything has been exposed to an inverted degree, where the sensations and pleasure of having a part of your body stimulated over and over again until there is no feeling at all (lets take the brain for instance), having real sex on a cinema screen is refreshingly accessable, understandable and ultimately the viewer can involve themselves as much or as little with this now like never before.
I dont think sex is ever gratuitous in any shape or form especially on a cinema screen -there is always someone in that cinema who appreciates it more then you do, and for that reason it can never be gratuitous.
